Identity Associates, 2023
In Identity Associates, Clara Aldén collaborates with her own children to create a series of watercolor paintings. The project explores what it might look like to create a shared documentation of their everyday reality. The paintings are based on photographs taken by the children using the artist's mobile phone, after which they are invited to draw directly onto the finished works. The children's participation in the artistic process is essential; they move from being objects of representation to becoming active subjects in the production of the work. The project also reflects on aesthetic hierarchies, asking what determines whether an aesthetic expression is recognized as art, and what happens when different visual languages meet on the same surface.
